Engine Dimensions & Weights

The dimension tables below, organized by engine family, list the nominal length, width, height, and weight of common engine models. Note that dimensions may vary due to model year changes and optional equipment, including single alternator vs dual alternator versions. Measuring an engine within an engine bay is not an exact science, but these dimensions will give you a general idea and good starting point in planning your engine swap or diesel conversion.

[2] - Height measured from bottom of engine block to top of engine; oil pan sump not included and varies with application (i.e. pickup versus medium duty).
[3] - Overall dimensions are larger for turbocharged 6.5 diesels; turbocharger hangs off of the passenger side exhaust manifold.

Summary & Key Points

• When it comes to diesel conversions and engine swaps, physical dimensions are only half the battle; diesel engines tend to be hefty and their weight must be taken into consideration, particularly in smaller vehicles.

• Big engines require a big cooling system; ensure that the there is adequate space in your converted vehicle for an appropriately sized radiator and engine cooling fan.

• Certain engines listed above may have additional packaging restraints that includes accessory drive components, an intercooler, turbocharger, or other necessary equipment.
