Chrysler TorqueFlite A727

TorqueFlite 727 Automatic Transmission Specs & Ratios

Chrysler's TorqueFlite 727 three speed automatic transmission was developed in the early 60's for a variety of car and pickup applications. The roots of late model Chrysler overdrive transmissions can be traced to the design of the original 727. Its strength, availability, and aftermarket support make it a suitable transmission for a variety of applications.

The TorqueFlite 727 is a three speed automatic transmission developed and produced by Chrysler. Since 1962, this transmission has been used in a variety of Chrysler vehicles as well as some AMC engines. Behind the AMC 304 and 360 CID V-8 engines, the transmission was marketed as the "Torque-Command 8". It is praised for its strength, endurance, and simplicity. A testament to its strength lies in the fact that this transmission was used with nearly every small and big block V-8 engine that Chrysler had, including the powerful 440 Magnum and 426 Hemi engines. As such, it remains extremely popular in drag racing and off-road vehicles, which demand a transmission that can be affordably built to take punishment after punishment in grueling conditions.

The 727 was eventually renamed and divided into the 36RH and 37RH transmissions, where "3" designates it is a three speed transmission, "6/7" are strength designations (on a scale of 1-9, with 9 being the strongest), "R" identifies it is intended for rear wheel drive applications, and finally the "H" designated that it was hydraulically controlled. The transmission's final year was 1991, but its basic architecture evolved into the TorqueFlite A518 and later 46RH transmission, which featured a 0.69 : 1 overdrive.
