3.0 Power Stroke Maintenance Schedule

Service procedures that are required at a declared vehicle mileage OR time interval should be performed at the point where either the mileage OR the time is reached, whichever should come first. The 3.0L Power Stroke equipped Ford F-150 falls under the "severe" or "heavy duty" service category if any of the following is true:

• Vehicle is idled excessively (greater than 10 minutes of idling within a 60 minute period of time)
• Vehicle is frequently driven in heavy stop-and-go type traffic conditions or is used regularly for short trips that prevents the engine from reaching normal operating temperature
• Vehicle is operated in extremely hot (> 100° F) or cold (< 32° F) weather conditions
• Vehicle is used to tow a trailer or haul heavy cargo
• Vehicle is operated off-road or in dusty conditions

Vehicles that are operated on biodiesel fuel blends should consider more frequent fuel system service intervals. Note that the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel is only certified for up to B20 biodiesel blends (20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel). Biodiesel is sometimes marketed as renewable or biomass diesel fuel.

Engine Oil Viscosity Chart

3.0L Power Stroke engine oil viscosity chart

3.0L Power Stroke engine oil viscosity chart

A SAE 5W-30 engine oil is preferred for normal driving and is suitable in all ambient temperatures greater than -20° F. However, Ford requires a SAE 5W-40 engine oil under severe duty conditions that include extended periods of towing. While a 10W-30 viscosity grade engine oil is acceptable in all ambient temperatures greater than 0° F, it is not preferred under any particular conditions.

For temperatures below -20° F, a SAE 0W-40 engine oil is required; while the 0W-40 viscosity grade is suitable in all temperatures, note that it is not recommended when the ambient temperature permits a 5W-30 or 5W-40 engine grade.

The required API category is dependent on the selected viscosity grade. 5W-30 and 10W-30 engine oils must meet API FA-4 specifications while 5W-40 and 0W-40 must adhere to API CK-4 specifications. A full synthetic SAE 5W-40 engine is highly recommended within its temperature range as most vehicles meet at least some "severe" service criteria during ordinary drive cycles.
