2.8L Duramax Maintenance Schedule
Service procedures that are required at a declared vehicle mileage OR time interval should be performed at the point which either the mileage OR time interval is reached (whichever should come first). A vehicle may fall under the "severe" or "special" service category if any of the following is true:
• Vehicle is idled excessively (> 10 minutes of idling in a 60 minute period), frequently driven in heavy stop-and-go traffic, or is used regularly for short trips that prevent the engine from reaching normal operating temperature.
• Vehicle is operated in extremely hot or cold weather conditions.
• Vehicle is used to tow a trailer or haul heavy cargo.
• Vehicle is operated off-road or in dusty conditions.
Note - unless otherwise noted, service intervals apply to both Colorado/Canyon pickups and Express/Savana van models.

Normal conditions |
97,5000 miles |
[6] |
Severe conditions |
45,000 miles |
||
Replace front differential fluid |

[6], [7] |
|
Replace rear differential fluid |
|||
Add diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) |
As necessary or indicated that fluid level is low |
--- |
[1] Inspect at oil change intervals and replace as necessary.
[2] Do not exceed 7,500 miles/12 months between oil changes.
[3] Replace fuel filter(s) at required intervals OR as indicated when prompted by "CHANGE FUEL FILTER" message in the instrument panel display. More frequent fuel filter replacements are recommended when using biodiesel/biodiesel blends. Pickups have two fuel filter elements, vans have a single fuel filter.
[4] Recommend more frequent cooling system service after initial 150,000 mile/5 year service.
[5] Transmission service interval absent when vehicle falls under "normal" service category; recommend adhering to the "severe" service category and servicing transmission every 45,000 miles.
[6] Replace fluid immediately if submerged in water; water intrusion probable.
[7] No service interval provided by GM; recommend servicing at 100,00 mile intervals. Synthetic gear oil advised.

[1] Capacities are nominal; always fill to appropriate dipstick marker, fill plug level, or other applicable fluid level indicator. Oil and fluid levels should be verified before and after driving vehicle.
[2] SAE 5W-30 motor oil preferred within temperature range. SAE 0W-40 required if ambient temperature is expected to drop below -20° F. Recommend Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic diesel oil, specifically designed for diesel engine applications and meets GM dexosD, dexos2 specifications.
[3] Concentrated engine coolant must be diluted 50/50 with distilled water. Do NOT dilute premixed engine coolant. Cooling system capacity on Express/Savana vans depends on heater configuration and optional equipment.
[4] Or other acceptable diesel exhaust fluid; do NOT attempt to dilute DEF with a foreign substance under any circumstances.
